Anti-War Protesters Go To Trial in Cedar Rapids
A group of 11 anti-war protesters from Iowa City are set for trial on April 25th at the Linn County Courthouse on State charges of trespass. The group, known as the "Cedar Rapids 11" entered Senator Charles Grassley's office located in the Federal Building in Cedar Rapids on February 26, 2007 and did not leave when the building was about to close. The group was part of a national campaign called the "occupation project" which was sponsored by Voices For Creative Nonviolence . The purpose of their civil disobedience is aimed at ending the U.S. war and occupation of Iraq and attempting to have a dialogue with congressmen who continue to fund the war. Grassley did not contact the group. All 11 (9 men and 2 women) were arrested by the Cedar Rapids Police Department and taken to the Linn County Correctional Center. The group spent the night in jail and were released late the following afternoon. Iowa City attorney, Mary Wolfe , will be representing all eleven.

U of I GOP group cans Immigrant Game

By: Brittney Berget - The Daily Iowan

A UI College Republicans-planned Capture the Flag game centered on the issue of illegal immigration will not be held.

University Democrats President-Elect Atul Nakhasi said UI College Republican Chairman Greg Baker called him at roughly 9 p.m. on Tuesday to tell him that the event, scheduled for Thursday in City Park, had been canceled. Instead, the organization plans to invite a congressman to speak about former President Theodore Roosevelt, who the game was meant to recognize.

The game would have involved two teams - the "illegal immigrants" and the "border patrol" - competing to cross a dividing line that represented the United States-Mexico border. Those caught would be sent to "jail."

Despite the cancellation, opponents of the Republican group's event say they are still planning to host a forum on Thursday to talk about immigration issues. Roughly 50 UI students, faculty, and community members gathered Tuesday night to discuss how to respond to news of the planned Capture the Flag game.

"I'm almost glad this happened," said UI sophomore Vernon Jackson, who attended the meeting. "It's sparking unity, and it's a great chance for us to show our solidarity and togetherness."

U of I's GOP's "Catch the Illegal Immigrant Game"

By: Zhi Xiong - The Daily Iowan

The UI College Republicans - part of the College Republican National Committee - will host a Capture the Flag game Thursday at City Park.

The title of this game: "Catch an Illegal Immigrant."

The match is part of the UI College Republicans' second Conservative Coming Out Week, which kicked off on Sunday with "Condi Rice Day."

But the contest focusing on illegal immigration is arguably one of the more controversial elements of the week designed to promote and stoke awareness of conservative politics - a minority viewpoint on the solidly liberal UI campus.

Greg Baker, the president of the College Republicans, said the Catch an Illegal Immigrant game is a tribute to former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt.
